Delta and American have made improvements to their apps over the past couple of months, and United now joins the party with an impressive update. United’s app is often regarded as the best in the United States, and its strengths are on full display here.
Passengers will now be able to easily navigate their connections on the app. During layovers, this update will offer a special section on the app with a departure time countdown, estimated walk times to the gate, flight status updates, and tips for long layovers. The airline adds that passengers will receive a notification if United’s ConnectionSaver technology has been activated to hold the plane for them (in other words, “hurry up, we’re holding the plane for you!”).
In the case that somebody misses a connection, the app will give them personalized rebooking options, whether that’s a confirmed flight or a standby flight. That said, United has claimed that passengers using this app during the beta stage achieved a 98% success rate in making their connection.
It’s cool to see United innovate on the tech side of flying. Delta and American were more or less trying to catch up to United with their recent app updates, adding features like iOS Live Activities and others that United has already had.
Down the road, the airline claims that they are looking to add features including:
- Additional languages
- Navigation support, where the app will provide step-by-step directions and help passengers navigate the airport when location services are turned on
- Real time text messages supporting customers making connections
“We know that giving people more information, in a transparent and easy-to-understand way, can help de-stress the connecting flight experience,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer. “Our award-winning mobile app is a game-changer during travel, and with these new features, our customers will have even more real-time details about their flight and as a result, have an even better experience flying United.”
