Air travel is off to a rough week in the United States. Newark Airport disruptions are continuing to affect travelers, and the poor weather conditions throughout the country have delayed thousands of flights so far this week.
Let’s take a look at some of the disruption numbers from FlightAware.
Today: Tuesday, May 6
As of right now, 22:50 Eastern Time, there have been a total of 964 cancellations and 7,331 delays for flights within, into, or out of the US today.
The worst performing airport today (in order of cancellations) was by far Dallas Fort Worth, which was hammered by thunderstorms and heavy rain throughout the day. 540, or 47% of scheduled departures out of DFW, were delayed. In addition, a whopping 258 flights, or 22% of scheduled departures, were cancelled. FAA ground stops and ground delays were in effect for much of the day, hindering airline operations.
Newark came in as the second, thanks to the ongoing meltdown. Poor weather and visibility also played a role in operations today. The airport had 161, or 31% of scheduled departures, delayed, while 68, or 13% of scheduled departures, were cancelled.
Here are some other airports (scheduled departures):
- Dallas Love Field: 31 cancelled (8%), 128 delayed (36%)
- New York LaGuardia: 27 cancelled (4%), 255 delayed (44%)
- Houston George Bush: 26 cancelled (3%), 310 delayed (47%)
- New York John F Kennedy: 23 cancelled (3%), 249 delayed (36%)
- Boston Logan: 19 cancelled (2%), 174 delayed (25%)

Yesterday: Monday, May 5
Monday saw a total of 596 cancellations and 9,525 delays for flights within, into, or out of the US.
The airport with the most cancellations yesterday was Newark, which again had the effects of both the ATC meltdowns and weather disruptions. The airport had 79 (15%) scheduled flights cancelled, while 193 (36%) of scheduled flights were delayed.
DFW had the highest number of delays, with 514 (or 43% of scheduled departures). They also had a total of 47 (3%) flights cancelled.
Here are some other airports (scheduled departures):
- New York LaGuardia: 54 cancelled (9%), 306 delayed (53%)
- Washington Reagan National: 53 cancelled (11%), 190 delayed (40%)
- Boston Logan: 23 cancelled (3%), 215 delayed (29%)

Tomorrow’s Operations Plan
For tomorrow (Wednesday), we can continue to expect disruptions around Newark and throughout the Southern United States.
The FAA is expecting to issue ground stops for Newark. Denver, San Francisco, Orlando, Atlanta, and Washington Reagan National can also potentially see ground stop and ground delay programs.
Much of tomorrow’s delays should start in the afternoon hours.
