Review: Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill

I made a last-minute decision to stay at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, a tired property near Union Station undergoing renovation.

I had a chance to stop by the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill last week. This was a last-minute stay, as I was in the middle of rerouting my trip during a thunderstorm delay that I talked about in detail here.

I chose to stay here that night because I had an Amtrak train out of Union Station the next morning, and the location of this place was perfect.

Let’s go over my stay.

Booking and Check-in

This Hyatt Regency is a category 5 hotel. Points bookings will go for 17,000 points during off-peak, 20,000 during standard, and 23,000 during peak periods.

I paid cash for this stay though, which was just over $200 including taxes and fees. I booked it on that same night.

The hotel is about a 3 to 5 minute walk from Union Station. I got off the WMATA Red Line and walked over.

This is a large property, one of those suited for conventions.

A good portion of the lobby was under renovation. The front desk was down the escalators.

I arrived here just after 21:30, and hadn’t eaten anything since lunch. I asked the front desk agents during check-in if any food options were still available, and they told me that the onsite restaurant might take a very last-minute order for me. They were closing at 22:00.

I ran up to the 11th floor, where the restaurant was, before going to my 8th floor room. They were nice and took their last order of the night for me.

I was tired and just wanted something to eat, so I settled for a burger and chips.

I made my way back down to the 8th floor and arrived at room 883.

Room Impressions

The room was fairly spacious. I had a standard king room.

It’s definitely an older property, and I could see why half of this hotel is under renovation.

The TV was big. It’s billed as 65 inches, and I enjoyed watching the end of an NBA game as I settled down for the night.

Below the TV were some glassware and a coffee maker.

Next to the TV was a fairly large desk.

A mini fridge, which I didn’t use, was next to the desk.

This room definitely had more space than the Thompson I had stayed at the night before, which allowed for some extra furniture like this chair and footrest.

The bathroom was fairly average; nothing much special going on here. I did have difficulty getting the right water pressure going with the obscure shower head.

The amenities were by Pharmacopia, which I’ve seen in many other Hyatt Regencys. I’m actually a big fan of these.

More of them on the bathroom sink.

My room looked out towards the center of the hotel.

I had my burger soon after arriving in my room, which was pretty good. After a long day, I was willing to eat anything!

Other Amenities

There were several areas with couches and chairs throughout the lobby. Still though, a good portion was under renovation.

I spotted a FedEx office, an ATM, and a water bottle filling station while I was exploring around the lobby floor.

The renderings of the renovation do look nice. From what I’ve read, this should be completed by this coming fall season.

I did think that the current lobby and room looked pretty tired and in need of a renovation. I’m glad to see that they’ll get around to it soon.

Concluding Thoughts

This hotel served its purpose with its great location. Was I impressed by the rooms? No. It’s under renovation for a reason, and hopefully it turns out as good as the renderings seem to be.

Although the Thompson had smaller rooms, that property was much newer and nicer on most fronts. Once the renovation to this Regency is complete, however, I’ll hopefully have a chance to visit the new and improved rooms.

  1. The Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill sounds like a solid choice for both business and leisure travelers. The prime location near the U.S. Capitol and other major attractions is a big plus, especially for tourists looking to explore D.C. I also love that it offers modern amenities and a spacious, welcoming atmosphere. However, it’s a bit of a bummer that the dining options aren’t more extensive, and the crowding in the lobby during peak times could be a downside. Still, for the convenience and proximity to key sights, it seems like a great option overall!
