Japan Records 3.9M Foreign Visitors in October, the Second-Highest in Any Month

Japan is on pace to record well over 40 million total visitors by the end of the year, but an ongoing spat with China may pose a challenge.

The number of foreign visitors entering Japan reached 3.9 million in October, a rise of 17.6% year over year. This figure is the second-highest out of any month in the country’s history, just shy of the record set earlier this April.

At this rate, Japan is on pace to record well over 40 million total visitors by the end of this year, dwarfing last year’s record-setting figure of 36 million.

Japan counted 335,700 visitors from the United States, an increase of 20.6% year over year. In addition to the always popular travel month of October, the figure was fueled by a higher number of airplane seats by airlines and the continued weak Japanese Yen against the U.S. Dollar.

The number of Americans traveling over the Pacific to Japan continues to rise in both numbers and year-over-year increases, proving the resistance of the US to Japan market in 2025. Over 2.7 million have traveled from the U.S. to Japan so far, an increase of 22.1% from last year.

Meanwhile, the number of Chinese travelers to Japan hit 715,700, representing a 22.8% increase year over year. This brings up the total number from China this year to 8.2 million, a whopping 40% increase from 2024.

However, this rising trend in Chinese travelers will be challenged by an ongoing spat between China and Japan, which has prompted Beijing to issue a travel warning to its citizens, urging them to refrain from traveling to the neighboring country.

Given that tourists from China have made up 23% of the total number of foreign visitors into Japan so far this year, a sharp decrease in the China to Japan market can be expected to hit the airline and hospitality sectors.
