American Airlines has made changes to its long-haul schedules for the following winter, with its Europe strategy centered around its new Airbus A321XLRs.
The aircraft began operating premium transcontinental flights out of New York City in December 2025. The XLRs will see their first international assignment starting on March 8, 2026 to Edinburgh, and the airline will continue to expand service for the aircraft as it receives more deliveries.
The A321XLR is smaller and less expensive to operate over the Atlantic, and allows American to continue operating select transatlantic routes even during the slower winter months.
The following routes will see schedule changes involving the aircraft, flagged by aviation insider JonNYC on X:
- New York (JFK) – Barcelona (BCN): Extended to year-round service, operated by A321XLR in winter.
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Amsterdam (AMS): Operated by A321XLR from Feb. 25 to March 27, 2027.
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Edinburgh (EDI): Seasonal extension to Jan. 5, 2027, operated by A321XLR from Oct. 25, 2026.
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Lisbon (LIS): Operated by A321XLR from Jan. 5 to Feb. 25, 2027.

The Airbus A321XLR seats 155 passengers, with 20 Flagship Suites and 12 Premium Economy seats. The Boeing 787-8, for comparison, seats 234 passengers, with 20 Flagship Business and 28 Premium Economy seats.
The lighter load on the XLR allows the airline to have an easier time filling seats during the slow winter months, unlike the 787, which requires a lot more, particularly in coach. The 787 layout can work during peak summer months with a lot of leisure travelers, but that gets difficult during the off-season.
On the other hand, this also means that American has to capitalize on the premium sector during the winter with these aircraft, since a narrowbody across the Atlantic requires higher revenue per passenger, and as business class takes up a larger portion of this aircraft. The 20 Flagship Suites on the Airbus A321XLR make up for nearly 13% of the jet’s total seats, while the 20 Flagship Business seats on the Boeing 787-8 make up for just 8% of the total.
Other long-haul plans for American include an increase of MIA-GIG to 2x daily for the full winter season, and a reduction of LAX-AKL from daily to 4x weekly starting in December 2026.
