American Airlines has announced that its JFK-LAX transcon route will now receive Premium Economy service, beginning on October 5. This will align the airline with its competitors, who offer economy, premium economy, and business on this route.
Like with other Premium Economy offerings, passengers can expect priority check-in, security, and boarding, along with an amenity kit, pillows, and blankets.
“We are excited to provide customers the opportunity to experience our Premium Economy service on our premier domestic route,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “With the domestic debut of Premium Economy, customers will enjoy a more comfortable seat, enhanced amenities and elevated dining with hot entree choices when traveling coast-to-coast.”
The airline currently operates the A321T(transcon) aircraft between the two cities, but is looking to phase them out as they expect delivery of the new A321XLRs with brand new interiors. However, those XLRs continue to see delays:
JonNYC added that there are currently no seats onboard the XLRs.
So, although American looks to get rid of the A321T fleet, they still need a competitive premium product between JFK and LAX as they wait for the XLR deliveries, which seem to be taking time. For now, the airline opted to utilize existing aircraft that are already equipped with premium interiors.
This will most likely be served by the 777-200ER, which has business, premium economy, and economy. The schedule should be adjusted on July 28 to reflect the change. I expect a gradual phase in/out of these aircraft.
The 777 should keep the airline competitive with its peers on one of the most premium routes in the US. Still though, I’m looking forward to the new A321XLRs entering service, whenever that will be.
