American Announces Miami Airport Expansion, 17 New Gates in Concourse D

Construction is expected to be completed in 2030, and will replace the existing D60 gates at the end of Concourse D.

American Airlines, along with Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) and other related institutions, today annonuced plans for a reimagined Concourse D with expansions and renovations. The construction will break ground in 2027, and is expected to be completed in 2030.

Dubbed the Gate D60 project, the expansion will add 17 new gates for American accomodating larger mainline aircraft. Currently, the airport has numerous D60 gates that accomodates regional aircraft, all in a tight space. The new gates will replace this area, while a refresh will be welcomed by many passengers.

“Miami is an essential hub and international gateway for American, and it’s a key part of our history and our future,” said Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines. “The brand-new, reimagined D60 is a transformational project that will provide a much-improved experience for our customers and our team.”

American Airlines makes up for more than 60% of Miami’s traffic, with around 400 departures a day. It will connect the airport to 155 destinations spanning 45 countries during this year’s summer schedule.

The airline had announced plans for a new Flagship Lounge and an expansion of its Admirals Club last year. While the timeline of these lounges are unclear, they could coincide with the Gate D60 project.

The plan is for the existing Flagship Lounge to be combined with the existing Admirals Club next door, create one big Admirals Club. The new Flagship Lounge will be placed in a new location, which has yet to be announced. Once American confirms more details regarding its Concourse D refresh, we may hear more about the new lounge situation.

Either way, this is an exciting development for Miami passengers. While 2030 is still four years away, it’s good to know that a reimagined terminal is on its way.
