American Adds Thousands of Seats Between U.S. and Caribbean Following Airspace Closure

In addition to more flights, the airline has added larger aircraft, including widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER.

American Airlines has added nearly 7,000 seats with 43 extra flights between the United States and the Caribbean, following an airspace closure in the region stemming from a U.S. attack on Venezuela.

In addition to airspace over Venezuela, the FAA also prohibited commercial flights from flying over Caribbean airspace. The closure lasted most of the day on Saturday, Jan. 3, cancelling many flights and stranding thousands of passengers.

With an expansive network in the region, American Airlines has had a lot of heavy lifting to do to recover stranded passengers, and has led the recovery. Passengers traveling to, through, or from affected airports can make changes and cancellations without penalty with the airline’s travel waiver, and the carrier has added fare caps.

In addition to more flights, the airline has added larger aircraft, including widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER.
