American’s London Departures Encounter Catering Issues

Passengers may encounter single tray meals in premium cabins, no ice cream, and menus with limited selections.

American Airlines is currently experiencing catering issues on flights out of London Heathrow, according to aviation insider JonNYC on X.

The airline is double catering these flights, meaning it is flying westbound meals from the United States for the return leg. Given that each aircraft is limited in galley space and does not have enough space to pack two flights worth of meals on one aircraft, the amount of catering available is taking a hit. It is unclear as to how long this will continue, but passengers can expect disruptions in catering at least for the short-term.

Some changes passengers may encounter include single tray meals in premium cabins, no ice cream, menus with limited selections, and overall less food.

American is in the middle of switching catering providers at London Heathrow, and it is believed that the transition is causing the double catering for its departures. While the airline has confirmed the catering issues themselves, it has yet to discuss the reason why.

American Airlines connects London Heathrow with nine U.S. destinations, and its transatlantic joint venture with British Airways makes for a massive operaton over the Atlantic. While it is unclear how long American’s catering issues will continue, passengers can expect limited options over the short-term.
