American Airlines has announced additional winter routes to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. This involves a mix of new routes and added frequency, serviced from Chicago, Philadelphia, and Miami, and will go on sale starting on July 14.
At its peak this coming winter, the airline will operate more than 430 daily departures to 97 destinations throughout the regions, aiming to capture leisure travelers looking to escape the cold.
The Oneworld alliance doesn’t have a Latin American member, so it’s often up to American to cover their limited network in the region. To their credit, they often do a good job in offering a strong list of routes and destinations, and I think they’re nailing it this winter given what they have.
From Chicago
Passengers from Chicago will have the following new options:
- Chicago (ORD) – Mexico (MEX): Daily service starting October 26
- Chicago (ORD) – Queretaro, Mexico (QRO): Daily service from December 18 – January 5
From Philadelphia
Philly will see one new route and expanded capacity of three routes:
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ): Daily service starting December 18
- Philadelphia (PHL) – Aruba (AUA): Increase to 2x daily service
- Philadelphia (PHL) – San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU): Increase to 3x daily service
- Philadelphia (PHL) – St. Maarten (SXM): Increase to daily service
From Miami
No new routes for Miami, but passengers can enjoy expanded capacity on eight routes:
- Miami (MIA) – Dominica (DOM): Increase to 2x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – Kingston, Jamaica (KIN): Increase to 4x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – Marsh Harbour, Bahamas (MHH): Increase to 3x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – North Eleuthera, Bahamas (ELH): Increase to 3x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – Ocho Rios, Jamaica (OCJ): Increase to 2x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU): Increase to 7x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – Santiago, Dominican Republic (STI): Increase to 3x daily service
- Miami (MIA) – Tortola, British Virgin Islands (EIS): Increase to 5x daily service

As I touched on earlier, Oneworld does not have a member in Latin America, with the exit of LATAM back in 2020.
Copa Airlines and Avianca cover the region for Star Alliance, while Aeromexico covers the area for SkyTeam. United and Delta can rely on them for some of their Latin American flights, while American Airlines doesn’t have this luxury in Oneworld; they have a lot of heavy lifting to do in the region. They generally always have a strong offering though, and the airline looks to compete with its expansion for this coming winter.
“As the leading U.S. airline in Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America, at American we’re focused on growing our network, giving our customers access to their favorite destinations in the region — from the tropical paradise of Puerto Rico to the dynamic and cosmopolitan city of Mexico City, and beyond,” said José A. Freig, Vice President of International and Inflight Dining Operations. “With these new routes and additional flying, next winter we’ll operate 10% more seats than the previous year, a testament to our commitment to the region and our customers.”
